After a half-month visit to China, a team from the IM

led by Asia and Pacific Department Deputy Director Kenneth Kang, summarized that “China can play an impor

tant role and would benefit from further opening up and other structural reforms that enhance competition.”

The previously issued policy is sufficient to stabilize growth by 2020, despite the rec

ent US tariff hike, according to the fund’s report. “No additional policy easing is ne

eded, provided there are no further increases in tariffs or a significant slowdown in growth.”

Only if the trade tensions further escalate and threaten economic and financial stability, a

dditional policy easing, such as fiscal expansion, could be used to stabilize the economy, it said.

China will issue a white paper about its stance on economic and trade talks with the United States Sunday morning.

The white paper, titled China’s Position on the China-US Economic and Trade Consultat

China has raised additional tariffs to a maximum 25 percent on part of the $60 billion worth of US pr

The rates of additional tariffs on some of the products will be increased to 25 percent, 20 percent, and 10 percent, re

The move came after the US’ latest tax increase on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods from 10 percent to 25 percent.

All-women quartet gives Peking Opera a unique touch

For the first time in the history of Peking Opera, four women recently performed a piece in the China National Peking Opera Company production, Stories of the Red Army.

The Peking Opera performance was one of the 51 productions showcased at the 12th China Art Festival in Shanghai.

Two performances took place at Shanghai’s Majestic Theater on May 27 and 28.

For the show, the CNPOC brought together three stories based on events during the Red Army’s epi

c Long March (1934-36), to create the modern Peking Opera, which premiered in Beijing on Aug 1, 2018.

“They are stories about the resilience and bravery of the Red Army during the Long March,” says Song Chen, head of the CNPOC.

Habib also applauded China’s interest in Washington’s agric

ricultural products such as apples and cherries, and specifically mentioned tourists and students from China.

With the current trade disputes between China and the US, however, Habib is seeing some frustration in his state.

“I’m of course frustrated at the effects of some of the Chinese-im

posed tariffs on our exporters – that’s a huge problem first for our growers, and companies in our

aerospace supply chain, and definitely our fish and seafood – they’ve been affected by Chinese tariffs,” said Habib.

With the Trump administration gradually imposi

ng 25 percent tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports over the past year, China has already retaliated with

tariffs on $110 billion worth of US products, and has planned a tariff hike on $60 billion worth of US goods on June

Good trade ties vital at state level in US trade relatio

US states continue to value trade relations with China, despite ongoing tensions at the i

nternational level, and they hope tensions will be resolved through negotiations.

“I’m very optimistic on the China-US trade relationship,” Cyrus Habib, lieutenant governor of Washington, said in an inter

view with China Daily as he was attending the Fifth China-US Governors Forum in Lexington, Kentucky, last week.

China is the state of Washington’s top trading partner, with more than 20 percent of the state’s expor

ts going to China, and around 30 percent of its imports came from China in 2018, according to the US Census Bureau.

“It’s truly something that touches every part of our state,” said Habib. “And that went from the i

nformation communication technology sector and manufacturing sector all the way to the agricultural industry and tourism.”
